If you're on a busy schedule, it's most likely the best idea to fly directly to Oulu via Helsinki.

But in case you're not in a hurry - Helsinki is worth a visit. You will most likely save money too if you stop there and continue your journey with a train.

Getting to Oulu by plane

Finnair operates the route from Helsinki to Oulu and has multiple flights every day. They fly to several destinations around the world and their prices are decent.

If you're coming from the United States it might be worth to check flights with Scandinavian Airlines to Helsinki.

Flying to Rovaniemi is also an option during wintertime - there are several international flights every day from various destinations. Take a bus to the railway station, hop on a train, and two hours later you'll be in Oulu.

Airport in Oulu is located 15 km from the city centre. You can get to the city centre by taking a bus or taxi. We recommend using OTAXI, FixuTaxi, Uber or Bolt.

Getting to Oulu by train

Train is a great choice for travelling in Finland. It's cheap and suitable for working (especially the seats on 2nd floor of the restaurant car and in Ekstra class). All the seats have power outlets and there's a wifi though it may not always work - usually it works half of the ride.

VR uses dynamic pricing, so it's wise to purchase your tickets early. Getting your tickets directly from VR should always be the cheapest choice.

The train ride from Helsinki to Oulu takes approximately 6 hours, but don't expect the train will arrive exactly in the minute they promise.

You can board the train from Helsinki city centre, Pasila and Tikkurila (closest to the airport).

The railway station in Oulu is located in the city centre, and it's less than a 10 minute walk to Sokos Hotel Arina and Theatre Rio.
